Faculty Senate Executive Committee Meeting

A discussion ensued regarding the next steps in the visioning/planning process. Dr. Garrison noted that the complete package should be ready for distribution the week of May 19th. The package will include the vision, mission, goals, scorecards with metrics and administrative structure. Also, there are plans to put the information on the website so faculty can review throughout the summer months and provide feedback via link. There will be freeze dates established in terms of data submission.
An important part of the SACS review is an in-depth study so it is important to have a strategic plan in place. Dr. Garrison is considering hiring a consultant for the institutional effectiveness and evaluation portion of the SACS accreditation process. Some units at UAB have already gone through external evaluations (e.g., Department of Music was visited by the National Association of Schools of Music.). It is very important that all units complete the evaluations when distributed.
It is premature to predict what the FY03-04 budget will be; however, the administration has begun to prepare various scenarios with salaries remaining a top priority. It is hoped that the State will be able to provide information that can be used in the planning process within the next 2-3 weeks.
Board of Trustees
Since the legislative districts were revised, the open position on the Board is now in District 7 instead of District 6. Since District 7 includes a portion of Birmingham, UAB is still searching for candidates to submit for consideration. UAB is focusing on graduates as well as diversity. The Faculty Senate may contact Sandy Murell for district maps to determine if any proposed candidates would be eligible.
The Faculty Senate will begin evaluation of the deans at the beginning of the Fall Term. Human Resource Management has supplied a faculty e-mail listing so the evaluations could be conducted over the Internet. President Garrison supported using the list for the evaluation process. A letter from President Garrison will be distributed which encourages faculty participation in the evaluation process.
