Summary of the December 11 Faculty Senate Meeting


Chair Report: Chair Pat Greenup announced the following items: 1) Climate survey results posted on UAB ADVANCE page; 2) Elections process has begun and nominations needed for senate officers, senators, and FPPC representatives; 3) Topics discussed at FSEC meeting included agendas, family friendly revisions to faculty handbook recommended by Provost, standards of behavior revisions to faculty handbook recommended by FPPC, communication from USGA about academic calendar, and elections process; 4) Topics discussed at FSEC meeting with President and Provost included records verification for faculty vacation and sick time, standards of behavior handbook revisions, and campus safety.


President Report: President Carol Garrison announced the following items: 1) Heritage Hall will open for classes in January 2008; 2) David Allison received Presidential Award for Excellence in Mentoring; 3) Campus safety being addressed by university.


Presentations: Brian Mackin discussed athletics master plan and Provost Eli Capilouto reviewed family friendly recommendations for faculty handbook, consulting policy, and funding distribution indices for academic units with undergraduate programs.


Standing Committee Reports: Faculty Policies and Procedures Committee Senate Past-Chair Joe March reported that committee is discussing firearms and leave policies and family friendly revisions to faculty handbook from Provost. Due to time restrictions, the senate voted to defer discussion about recommended revisions to alcoholic beverages policy and section 3.8 on standards of behavior of faculty handbook until January senate meeting.


University-wide Committee Reports: Senate Representative to UAB Undergraduate Programs Council Jeanne Hutchison reported on topics discussed at last meeting including approval of five recommendations for Provost from two of its subcommittees.


Announcements: Next senate meeting is January 8, 2008 in Administration Building Penthouse CR1, next FSEC meeting is December 19, 2007, next FSEC meeting with President and Provost is January 3, 2008, and next FPPC meeting is December 14, 2007. Nominations for Senate Chair-Elect and Secretary are due February 1, 2008, and nominations for Senators and FPPC Representatives are due February 22, 2008.
