Greetings, and welcome to the Cell, Molecular, and Developmental Biology (CMDB) theme, part of the Graduate Biomedical Sciences program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine. The CMDB theme consists of a diverse group of scientists and physicians who have a collective interest in fundamental processes in cell, molecular, and developmental biology and how alterations in these processes result in human diseases and birth defects.  UAB is among the top 25 NIH-funded research institutions in the US.

Each of our faculty is committed to providing the strongest education and training in fields of cellular, molecular, and developmental biology to ensure students develop the necessary skills for a career in science. This is accomplished through a strong emphasis on research, mentoring, and hands-on instruction with a curriculum that reflects rapid changes in science.  The broad scientific interests and expertise of our faculty along with the collaborative nature fostered at UAB provide an exciting environment of learning and discovery. There are exceptional training and educational opportunities awaiting postdoctoral fellows, medical students, and Ph.D. graduate students in the CMDB theme that will prepare them for successful and rewarding careers in academia, government, biotechnology, pharmaceutical research, or any career requiring strong training in critical thinking and the scientific method.

CMDB is a cross-disciplinary theme at a UAB, where enthusiasm for scientific discovery through rigorous experimentation is at the forefront.  We hope that you consider this an invitation to explore the many possible opportunities offered by the CMDB theme. The rapid pace with which science has advanced in recent years makes this an exciting time to be involved in biomedical research.  It is now possible to address fundamental questions thought unapproachable only a few years ago.  These web pages will describe the cutting-edge research conducted by our faculty and explain how we can help you continue your development as a clinical or biomedical scientist.

We are always searching for the brightest and most dedicated students to join the highly competitive CMDB theme and experience first hand the excitement and thrill of making discoveries that will significantly improve human health.  We appreciate your time and interest in the CMDB theme.  If you would like additional information or would simply like to leave a comment, please send us an email.  We look forward to hearing from you.
