The Immunology Graduate Theme invites applications from individuals committed to an intensive course of study and research training leading to the PhD degree. Applicants with bachelors, masters, and professional degrees are encouraged to apply.
Acceptance is based on undergraduate record (curriculum and grade point average [GPA]), Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores, letters of recommendation, a personal statement of research and career interests, and past research activities. Domestic candidates who pass the first round of selection will be invited to visit UAB and meet the Immunology faculty and students.
The general requirements for acceptance into the Theme are:
minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
Revised GRE scores of >50% on each (verbal and quantitave). We do not require Subject Test scores.
a strong background in biology, chemistry, and/or mathematics. Undergraduate level courses in immunology, cell biology, biochemistry, physics, genetics, organic and analytical chemistry are strongly encouraged. Undergraduate mathematics through calculus is also recommended.
International students must submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) earned within the last two years. Applicants with scores of 600 (paper-based), 250 (computer-based), or 100 (internet-based) or higher will be considered.
Applications are reviewed beginning October 15th of each academic year with offers being made from November 1 until April 15th.
The deadline for domestic applicants is February 1.
The deadline for foreign applicants is January 15.
Early applications are encouraged. Only exceptional applicants will be considered after deadline.

Financial Support - Student Stipends. All students in the program receive a stipend (currently $26,000), tuition and fees, and single coverage health insurance. Support is provided by the Theme, by the student's mentor, or through one of many fellowship programs, some of which are described below.
Minority Program. The University has a Comprehensive Minority Faculty and Student Development Program designed to increase minority student enrollment in academic programs. Several minority graduate fellowships, which provide stipend support and cover expenses for tuition and fees, are available.Fellowships and Training Grants. Several training grants from the National Institutes of Health provide financial support for predoctoral students in specified areas of research. Highly qualified students are encouraged to apply for individual predoctoral grants available from several extramural agencies. Your advisor and other faculty members will help you apply for positions on training grants and in the preparation of predoctoral grant applications.
