Upper Level Elective Courses Print E-mail

PBMM Policy on Upper Level Elective Courses

  • Theme students may choose any of the courses listed below or in the GBS Course Catalog to fulfill the upper-level elective requirement.  (Note:  additional work/assignments may be required for students who enroll in first-year GBS courses for upper-level credit.  Students should contact the Course Director for more information).    

  • Theme students may choose from a variety of other JHS/SOM/GBS courses after obtaining permission from the theme.  (Requests should be sent to Jason.)  

  • Theme directors will review course content and requirements for all non pre-approved courses requested to be considered for advanced credits and request a short description from student and mentor as to how the requested course would benefit student in his/her research.

  • The theme reserves the right to request that a letter grade be given to the student in courses which are P/NP.  Prior written agreement between the course director(s) and student must be obtained prior to course commencement.  

  • To ensure the equivalent of an upper-level course workload, the theme reserves the right to request that extra assignments be given to the student enrolled in first-year GBS courses.  Prior written agreement between the course director(s) and student must be obtained prior to course commencement.

To receive approval for all non pre-approved courses the following should be sent to Jason ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ):

  • Desired course number, name, and CRN

  • Note from mentor and/or dissertation committee chair as to why taking this course would benefit student's research

  • Syllabus for the course

Other Pre-Approved Courses 

  • Additional work/assignments may be required for students enrolled (see above).  
  • Courses are listed under the deparment which takes primary responsibility for course.
  • Permission from the department may be required in order to register for these courses.  Students should contact the Course Director or Jason, if permission is needed.
