What is Gene Therapy?

Gene Therapy represents a novel approach to human disease based on direct employment of nucleic acids as medicine. Whereas originally conceptualized as an approach for autosomal recessive inherited disorders, current human clinical protocols embrace approaches for infectious disease, autoimmune disorders, and chronic acquired disorders, such as cancer and coronary artery disease. On this basis, gene therapy may be currently understood to potentially represent an appropriate intervention in any disease state with a characterized disorder of gene regulation.
