ANAL CANCER

The anus is the opening at the end of the large intestine through which solid bodily waste is passed. Anal is ucommon, but when it is present, it can occur on the outer (anus) or inner (anal canal) part of the rectum.

Symptoms:

Symptoms of anal cancer include:

  • Pain or pressure around the anus
  • Rectal bleeding
  • A lump or swelling near the anus
  • Itching or discharge from the anus

Treatment:

Anal cancer is most often treated with surgery or a combination of surgery and chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy depending on how advanced the cancer is.

Patients with advanced anal cancer may be eligible to participate in one of the clinical trials offered by the Multidisciplinary Gastrointestinal Oncology Center.
