Our mission at International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) is to provide quality services, programs, and activities that enhance cultural awareness, enrich international educational and research opportunities, and encourage global perspectives for students, faculty, and staff.

ISSS advises international students and assists visiting international faculty and scholars in matters of immigration, federal and state taxation, and orientation to the UAB and Birmingham communities. ISSS also serves as a collaborative resource center that facilitates, promotes, and strengthens international understanding on campus and throughout the Birmingham community.

ISSS is located in the beautiful new international center on the second floor of Mervyn H. Sterne Library on the corner of 9th Avenue and 13th Street South.

Effective August 9, 2018, all F and J students who commit a status violation, intentionally or unintentionally, will begin accumulating unlawful presence in the US the day after the violation. With this new rule, it is even more important that students and exchange visitors take the necessary precautions to maintain their status and use ISSS as a resource. Additional information about unlawful presence can be found here.
