The purpose of this information is to make sure that every Senator knows the basics about the GSG. If you have any questions, please contact us at gsg@uab.edu.

Senator Application

Students interested in being a senator should apply through this form.

Eligibility
  • Must be a full time graduate student (9 hours).
  • Must be in good academic standing.
  • Must not be solely seeking MD, OD, or DMD degrees.
Attendance

GSG Senate/Student Body meetings are usually held the first Wednesday of every month at 5:00 p.m. Senators are required to attend. However, if they are unable to attend, the GSG Secretary must be notified prior to the meeting and an excused absence will be recorded. Three unexcused absences in a 12 month period results in removal of voting rights.

Voting

The right to vote as a Senator is an important privilege. It is the Senate that makes important decisions on how graduate student fees are spent. As a Senator, voting is one of the most important ways the voice of the department is heard. Senators must be present to vote, no absentee voting or proxy.

Duties
  • Forward monthly minutes and other legislation and notices sent by the Executive Board to graduate students in their college/school.
  • Serve on one GSG committee.
  • Attend monthly GSG Student Body meetings.
  • Vote on important GSG resolutions and constitutional changes.
  • Keep peers informed about GSG travel grants and activities by posting or emailing notices.
  • Answer any questions students may have about GSG travel grants and otheractivities.
  • Inform students about the availability of travel grants and other activities, as much of the funding goes towards these.
Committees

GSG frequently forms committees to make decisions about a topic. This is a great way to take an active role in the GSG and a stepping stone to other leadership positions. Many of the decisions made by the GSG are formed during committee meetings. Also, serving on committees helps you learn more about the GSG and how it operates.

Constitution

Students interested in being a senator should thorougly read GSG's constitution.
