The UAB Heart Transplant Program has gained international recognition as one of the premier thoracic transplant programs in the United States. Since its inception in 1983, the UAB Thoracic Transplant Team has performed almost 500 heart transplants with outstanding survival rates. UAB Hospital is ranked as one of "America's Best Hospitals" in U.S. News and World Report.
We hope these web pages will help you understand the important ongoing research mission of the UAB Heart and Lung Transplant Program. While state and federal funding and pharmaceutical grants help support these programs, additional financial assistance is critical to the success of this research in prolonging life after transplantation for patients suffering from endstage heart and lung disease. We are indebted to Dr. A. G. Diethelm (Chairman of Surgery) and Dr. A. D. Pacifico (Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery) for their years of continuous, enthusiastic support of the UAB Cardiothoracic Transplant Programs.
