How to prepare for a successful career.

Screen_shot_2012-09-11_at_12.54.32_PMTwelve years of school. This is where most of us really start our careers and prepare to enter the job market.

In theory, twelve years of basic education prepares us for our career or entrepreneurial ventures – but in most instances all it does is prepare us for college – or yet another four plus years of education geared at career preparation.

In both k-12 and college (or other type of advanced education) we are told how the world works and how we are to work in the world to succeed. The end goal of it all – minus the broadened education to survive in society – is a job. Ok, sometimes we call it a career, a business, or even an entrepreneurial endeavor, but lets be clear – they (the teachers and those who in their infinite wisdom counsel you whether you ask for it or not) always talk in terms of getting a job and going to work.

IEM Start Up Company Caters this Year's Seminar
Raposos is an American based company that imports Spanish Gourmet and Tapas. The company was founded by Ruben Raposo, an IEM Alumni (2012), as primarily an online company. When he began this company he was packaging up his products from a basement office in his home. Raposo joined IEM in 2010 in an effort to revolutionaize his business and take it from being an online hobby to a full time restaurant catering business. His efforts are going well. Over the last 2 years, Raposo has grown his business to where he now has his own distibutor who does the packaging of his products at a separate facility and most recently, it was Raposos that catered one of the lunches at the IEM seminar this year providing new clients with a taste of Spain through a variety of gourmet meats, cheeses, and unique tapas selections. While his ultimate goal is still on the horizon for this IEMer, the future looks bright. We are looking forward to watching the future of Raposos.

Modern Slavery in America E-mail

Modern SlaveryWe often reflect on the slavery issue our country has struggled to get past. We have books, movies, and even days to remember the struggles. But, as I look around and meet with people I see new forms of slavery in the most prosperous country in the world.

  1. Debt – The debt crisis has overtaken us – and many have become totally enslaved to serving their debt. Their solution to get out is often a more creative slavery relationship through refinancing or “debt-consolidation.” While I do not consider myself to be a financial counselor – I have had to dive into this area of slavery many times. Debt causes people to give up on their dreams since they can never break free from what is holding them back.
  2. Corporate America – No… I am not bashing the corporate machine in this country. But lets face it – the Dilbert syndrome has crushed many of our desires and forced many of us into another slavery trap. We now worry about what changes are going to take place in our companies in the coming months – worrying what benefits we may loose, what jobs may go away. Like refinancing deals – we sometimes find a glimmer of hope by changing employers – at least until the reality of the new slave relationship we have just gotten into hits home.
  3. Entitlements – Our government (which is “we the people”) in our goodness to take care of our own, have in fact created slaves. I meet with people every week who have the mindset that getting free money from the government – from food stamps to free housing or free tuition – is the way to live. Yet, they are stuck. Again – one law change crushes them – or gives them hope.
Get out of slavery here.

The Steps for Working With Difficult People

A while back we talked about how to work with difficult people, but here we are going to post just the steps towards acheiving this goal.

  • Be an active listener. Each of your team members have something valuable to bring to the project table. Listen and respect their ideas, even if you are not their biggest fan personally.
  • Be encouraging. Nothing helps build bridges between people faster than a compliment or word of support. Take time to notice the effort being put out by your team members, thank them for what they do, and encourage them to continue well.
  • Be conscious of personal bias. When you do not like someone because of personality differences, it can become easy to ignore their suggestions or advice simply because you do not want to have to use the ideas of someone you dislike. But that is hugely unwise and can put your project at a disadvantage. Listen to all suggestions equally, and implement the good ones even if they originate from someone you do not get along with.
