Amr Elhamamsy

Innovate Fellow

Amr is currently enrolled in the Ph.D. program at UAB in the cancer biology theme. He earned his master’s degree in biochemistry at Colorado State University, where he had the opportunity to work with distinguished professors on several research projects on model organisms. Before that, he graduated from the School of Pharmacy at Tanta University and worked as an oncology pharmacist in Egypt for several years.

Amr joined the Graduate Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. program in 2019 to fulfill his dream of making new discoveries in cancer research to improve patient outcomes and quality of life. His project focuses on elucidating the mechanistic details of metastatic breast cancer and discovering targetable vulnerabilities to mitigate metastatic progression. He received the 2022 O’Neal NextGen predoctoral scholar award, and his project received funding from the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama.

Amr’s valuable knowledge and diverse technical skills allow him to combine his academic and clinical-professional knowledge and adopt an interdisciplinary and translational approach to scientific challenges. As an Innovate Fellow, he joined the Bill L. Harbert Institute to get a comprehensive understanding of the entrepreneurial environment and biotech commercialization.

In his spare time, he likes hiking, playing soccer, and reading.
