Innovate Fellow

Shia Vang is currently enrolled in the Graduate Biomedical Sciences (GBS) Ph.D. program at UAB’s Heersink School of Medicine in the Biochemistry and Structural Biology theme. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry and Spanish from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His current research focuses on the role of O-GlcNAc modifications in the pathogenesis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Throughout his years as a Ph.D. trainee, he has presented at multiple conferences, authored multiple research manuscripts, and been awarded two institutional training grants.

Shia is interested in pursuing a career in patent law and is enthusiastic about learning new science and deciphering innovative technology to facilitate its process to the mainstream market. Outside of work, he frequently lifts at the gym, plays volleyball and ultimate frisbee, and enjoys hiking with his friends.
