Suman Karki

Innovate Fellow

Suman Karki received his Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Myongji University in South Korea. He joined the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care at UAB in 2012 as a postdoctoral fellow to study the pathogenesis of lung fibrosis, lung injury, and repair. He currently works as a staff scientist in the Department of Urology. He is particularly interested in studying the dependence of cancer cells on nutrients that complement metabolic reprogramming to enhance tumor progression and metastasis and how scientists can exploit such dependencies for therapeutic targeting.

Suman believes that convergence of scientific community and industry is crucial for a more significant impact of breakthrough innovation for patients. This requires a realistic assessment of inventions and the implementation of strategies to enable the discovery to benefit patients and other communities. Through his time as an Innovate Fellow, he hopes to learn firsthand about systematic processes that will allow inventors to collaborate with entrepreneurs and industry to fulfill unmet needs in various sectors of health care.

He loves running, hiking, and gardening in his free time.
