Infrastructure to Support Alabama and Regional Connections to Internet2
(Submitted June 1997 - approved for funding by NSF EPSCoR and Alabama EPSCoR.)
This project was approved for funding in 1998. Approximately $5 million will be spent to provide a high performance network to the following Alabama Research institutions:
Phase I of this project establishes the Gulf Central GigaPOP (GCG). The GCG will connect the above universities with high performance national networks such as
the vBNS and Abilene networks. During Phase I, agreements were reached with ITC^Deltacom and with the Alabama Supercomputer Authority. ITC^Deltacom will provide high speed circuits for the GCG;
ITC^Deltacom is an Internet2 corporate partner.
The Alabama Supercomputer Authority operates the Alabama Research and Education Network (AREN). AREN will provide NOC services for the GCG. Phase I of the EPSCoR project is expected to be completed in June 1999.
Phase II will include connection of the remaining institutions.
