What's a GigaPOP? GigaPOP's are network regional aggregation locations.
Today's Internet traffic does not flow based on geographic proximity; instead, traffic flows according to where the different telecommunications carriers agree to exchange information. GigaPOPs will pass research and education traffic based on regional proximity. Thus, network traffic flowing out of the region will have a remote location as its final destination, rather than flowing out and coming back to the same region over separate carriers.
