Southeastern Universities Research Association
(SURA)

The original Internet in the South was organized by cooperating universities with SURA acting as an umbrella organization.  The name of this network was SuraNet .  UAB was a charter member of SuraNet and set up the first non-military Internet node in the state of Alabama.

In early 1998, SURA called a meeting focused on information technology; SoX was organized out of this meeting.
