Association (SURA)
The original Internet in the South was organized by cooperating universities with SURA acting as an umbrella organization. The name of this network was SuraNet
. UAB was a charter member of SuraNet and set up the first non-military Internet node in the state of Alabama.
In early 1998, SURA called a meeting focused on information technology; SoX was organized out of this meeting.
UAB has been a leader in activities within the SURA region:
Gulf Central GigaPoP High performance research and education network for the State of
Alabama.
ViDe Jill Gemmill of UAB is a co-author of the videoconferencing cookbook, and currently
serves as chair-elect of ViDe. UAB School of Medicine was selected to participate in the Large Scale Video Network Prototype project funded by SURA.
Advanced Network Applications Workshop UAB hosted this Fall 1999 SURA workshop.
This conference is the larges one ever held by SURA, with over 165 people attending.
Health Sciences Workshop Based on the interest in telemedicine and biomedical applications at the 1999 Applications workshop, SURA began a Health Sciences
initiative.
Internet2 PKI Proposal UAB participated in a proposal from SURA institutions, in response to an RFP from UCAID.
