MERITORIOUS APPLICATIONS AT UAB AND UA

A meritorious research application, as defined by the National Science Foundation, is one requiring network capabilities which cannot be provided using existing network technology. Examples of new capabilities include speed, latency and quality of service.

New network technology will certainly be faster, but control over latency and quality of service are currently areas of research.  Latency has to do with controlling delay of transmission from one end to the other; this is important for delivering video without stops and stutters. Quality of Service requirements include the ability to prioritize messages.
