Science Teacher Preparation Program

The Alabama Alliance for Science, Engineering, Mathematics, and Science Education (ASEMSE) Teacher Preparation Program is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and is designed to increase the number of underrepresented minority science and mathematics teachers certified to teach in K-12 schools. The program provides the following paths to mathematics and science teacher certification: Path 1 - Entering freshmen enroll in the science education program leading to a bachelor's degree and certification. Path 2 - Students transferring from junior college enroll in a science education program leading to a bachelor's degree and certification. Path 3 - Students with a bachelor's degree in mathematics, science, or engineering enroll in a certification program. Path 4 - Students with a bachelor's degree in mathematics, science, or engineering enroll in a fifth year program leading to a master's degree and certification.

Eligibility and Support


To be eligible to participate in the program an applicant must:

1. Have been unconditionally admitted to one of the participating institutions as an entering freshman or junior college transfer student,

and
2. intend to major in science education and become certified to teach in elementary, middle, or high school,

or
3. have earned a degree in mathematics, science, or engineering and seeking to become certified to teach.

or
4. have earned a degree in mathematics, science, or engineering and enrolled in a fifth year education program leading to a master's degree and certification.

Selected participants will receive up to $1,000 in scholarship support each year.
