The primary aim of the NCAMP Teacher Preparation program (NCAMP TP) is to significantly increase the number of underrepresented minority students certified to teach science, mathematics, and technology in elementary and secondary schools. Specific objectives and strategies employed in the program emphasize collaborative learning approaches with positive, sustained faculty-student interaction, intensive mentoring with master teachers and other support persons, hands-on research, and internship experience. Five project initiatives address critical focal points for achieving qualitative and quantitative goals of the project. These initiatives consist of Pre-College, Outreach/Linkage/Bridging, Transition Through Teacher Education Program, and Inservice Education. Project components utilize strategies with demonstrable effectiveness in the retention of minority students in K-12 teacher preparation. In addition, they facilitate development and implementation of innovative methods to interest community college students in science, mathematics, and technology education. Special attention is also given to the transition point to graduate school, placement, and support in the workforce. Moreover, all project areas involve appropriate stakeholders to maximize academic, professional, and personal outcomes for students.
NCAMP TP functions as an integral part of the North Carolina Alliance for Minority Participation (NCAMP) as led by North Carolina A&T State University. Eight universities within the University of North Carolina System comprise this dynamic partnership. The TP program builds on best practices and successes of the NCAMP partners, the North Carolina Teaching Fellows (NCTF) Program, and the University of North Carolina Mathematics and Science Education Network (MSEN). Consequently, the TP project adheres to the overriding goals of NCAMP to develop a challenging, educational environment for minorities in undergraduate science, mathematics, and technology education leading to teacher certification.
During the summer of 1997, an Alliance-wide NCAMP Teacher Preparation Transition Institute will be sponsored at NC A&T State University. Additionally, a Student Research Conference, Summer Bridge Program, and Summer Research/Internship Program will be offered. Information pertaining to these programs and other services is available through the Statewide NCAMP Office.
