E-Mail Best Practices
- UAB cannot guarantee mail delivery to off-campus email providers due to limits on their service and reliability. Know that your use of such providers will occasionally result in email sent to you being dropped or misfiled. You are solely responsible for any consequences of lost or undelivered email to these off-campus mailboxes.
- Install and use good quality anti-virus software! Set the software to run and update itself automatically. For free or discounted anti-virus software, visit www.uab.edu/it/software.
- Empty your Trash folder regularly. The e-mails in this folder count toward your storage limit (100MB for employees).
- Stay up to date about the latest spoofs and hoaxes, and never pass them on. If in doubt about an e-mail – don’t open it!
- If you no longer wish to be part of a mailing list, unsubscribe to keep the clutter out of your Inbox.
- Don’t send large attachments to large numbers of people. Many e-mail providers block incoming attachments past a certain size limit, and every provider’s limit is different. As a general rule, try to keep attachments under 1MB.
- Avoid flashy graphics or special fonts in your signature line.
- Never, ever forward chain letters. You may be inadvertently passing on viruses or spyware!
- Set up spam rules to keep bogus mail out of your Inbox. Visit www.uab.edu/it/email/spam-filter-rules.html to set this up.
- Keep your password safe! With your BlazerID and password, people will have access to much more than your e-mail.
