UAB Remote Access for MS Windows

About Virtual Private Networks : A virtual private network (VPN) is a network in which some of the nodes are connected using the public Internet, but the data sent across the Internet is encrypted, so the entire network is effectively private. VPN software allows a secure network connection between your remote computing device and a host VPN server. This software also allows access to intranet and extranet networking resources that are restricted to certain IP addresses.

UAB provides VPN software for free to all UAB students, faculty and staff with a valid BlazerID and password.

1. To begin, go to the UAB Information Technology webpage at http://www.uab.edu/it. Under IT Links on the left-hand side of the screen, click the Software Library link.



2. In the green section on the left, click Desktop Software for Windows. A list of all available software will appear.
3. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the VPN link. The basic software information is listed.



4. Locate the green Download from DC/NS links. Click on the link under your classification (faculty/staff or students).



5. Click Click here to download the latest windows client… If you have other VPNs, scroll to the bottom of the page and click Click here to download the configuration file…



6. In the Connect to www.uab.edu box, enter your BlazerID and password and click OK.



7. When the download box appears, click Run to begin download. The client will install automatically. If not prompted to do this, save the file on your PC, then navigate to it and double click it to install the VPN client.



8. In the WinZip Self-Extractor box, click OK (see below). In the next dialogue box that appears, click Setup.



9. The Installshield Wizard will start up. It will lead you through the remainder of the setup. Please take the time to read the terms of conditions as directed. Also note that completing setup will probably require you to restart your computer.



10. Once setup is complete, you may access the VPN through the Start Menu. Find Start Menu>All Programs>Cisco Systems VPN Client>VPN Client.



11. To connect to the network, click Connect in the VPN window .

 

12. Log-in using your BlazerID and password.



13. A welcome window will appear. Click Continue. You are now connected to the VPN. To disconnect, navigate back to the VPN client page and click Disconnect.
