Software is protected by the Copyright Act, U.S. code - Title 17. This act gives the owner of the copyright the exclusive rights to reproduce, sell, and distribute the copyrighted work. UAB must comply with all provisions of this law and as such has the right to use the applicable software only in accordance with the terms of the software license.  Software is rarely ever actually 'sold' to a user outright.  The software 'owner/manufacturer' retains all rights to ownership but grants the user certain rights to use the software in return for a fee or other compensation.
