Student Applications
Authorized users may access the Student Applications through an encrypted web connection via the
Administrative Systems web page.
Students may access their personal information via the ACCESS system.
The Student Administration and Record System (STARS) is UAB's official student
records systems. It was developed in-house in 1982, in COBOL and Natural
programming languages and uses IMS and ADABAS databases. The system was
upgraded to take advantage of the new accounting structure implemented with
Oracle Financials Application in October 2004. STARS encompasses the following
components:
- Admissions
- Registration
- Financial Aid
- Records & Demographics
- Student Accounting
- Miscellaneous Receivables
- Student web A.C.C.E.S.S.
- Registration, enrollment, roster reporting for faculty
Admissions
The STARS undergraduate admissions system and the STARS graduate admissions system are used to track
and maintain information on all prospects and applicants except those of the six health professional
schools.
Class Scheduling
The class-scheduling component of STARS is used to record and maintain current course information for
all undergraduate programs and for all graduate programs other than the three health professional
programs. Course information includes course prefix and number, school, department, course title,
codes, course description, required labs, credit hours, prerequisites, fee codes, comments, and
cross-listings. The class-scheduling component also displays this information for the full academic
year, plus instructor, location, class size, times & dates, and print requirements. It also
includes class rosters consisting of student number, student name, student class level, student
school & major, course credit hours, and course grade. Course section information is provided
such as adjusted or current class size availability, actual size or number registered, available seats.
Registration
The registration component of STARS is used by the staff of Records & Registration to register,
drop, and add classes for students in all undergraduate programs and for all graduate programs other
than the three health professional programs. For each student (indicated by student number) for a given
term, the system displays the course number and name for each course, the course call number and
department, and the student's status in regard to that course.
Demographics
The demographics component of STARS gives general demographic information on each student such as class
level, expected graduation year/term, degree being pursued, school, major, minor, concentration, student
type, date of birth, race, sex and citizenship status. It also provides transcript and degree information.
STARS contains complete information on all undergraduate students and on all graduate students other than
health professional students. Limited demographic information for graduate students in the three health
professional programs is periodically uploaded in batch from their separate systems.
Graduate Record System
This component provides additional graduate degree information. The system tracks each graduate
student's course work, GPA and status in the program. It also tracks correspondence, faculty committee
assignments, applications for degree, candidacy, thesis/dissertation preparation and graduation
information.
Student Financial Aid
STARS includes a financial aid award and disbursement component for all undergraduate and graduate
students.
Student Accounting and Receivables
This component of STARS encompasses the student accounts receivable for all undergraduate and
graduate students, the University Cash Receipts System, and extensive programming applicable to
miscellaneous student and non- student accounts receivable.
