John C. Hammond Student MD/PhD program, Graduate student trainee, University of Alabama at Birmingham.
John Hammond
received his BS from
Lafayette College in Behavioral Neuroscience in
2003. Following graduation, he worked for Dr. Harry
Quigley at Wilmer Eye Institute at
Johns
Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. Working as a
laboratory technician, John studied intraocular pressure
changes and optical nerve damage in a rat model of
glaucoma.
John came to the University
of Alabama at Birmingham in July of 2005 to
begin working toward his MD/PhD as part of the
MSTP program.
After completing his first two years of coursework, John
joined Dr. Meador-Woodruff's lab working under Dr.
McCullumsmith. For his graduate thesis work,
John studies AMPA receptor trafficking in endosomes. He
has developed a modified immunoisolation technique that
allows for extraction of intact endosomes and their
contents from post-mortem human tissue. John is using
this technique to better understand part of the
underlying pathophysiology of schizophrenia.
