Adam Funk
Graduate student,
CMB, University of Alabama at
Birmingham.
Adam Funk received a Bachelor's
Degree in Biology from the University of Nevada, Reno in
2004. After graduating, he accepted a research
assistant position with a local biotech company, Sierra
Sciences LLC, where he championed a cell based high
throughput drug screening assay which has screened over
100,000 compounds to date. Sierra Sciences
LLC studies the beneficial effects of Telomerase
induction, focused on the prevention of cellular
senescence in an attempt to provide healthier, longer
life. In 2006, Adam began his pursuit of a Ph.D.
by joining the Cellular and Molecular Biology graduate
program at the University of Alabama, Birmingham.
In early 2007 he joined Dr. Meador-Woodruff's lab,
mentored by Dr. McCullumsmith, and began his
dissertation research in the department of Neurobiology.
Adam has worked on multiple projects in the lab,
including development of a postsynaptic density
isolation protocol as well as a general characterization
of synaptic and signaling molecules important for
cognition and synaptic transmission using postmortem
human tissue from subjects with schizophrenia.
