Characterization of excitatory amino acid transporter interacting proteins in the cortex in schizophrenia.

Glutamate reuptake is crucial for normal glutamatergic transmission, and is largely regulated by the excitatory amino acid transporters (EAATs).  Previous work in this laboratory has shown changes in EAAT mRNA expression in schizophrenia.  Several proteins have been identified that interact with these transporters and serve to regulate them, including ARHGEF11, GPS-1, JWA, and KIAA0302.  The goal of this project is to characterize these molecules at the transcript, protein, and interaction level, in postmortem tissue from both normal controls and schizophrenic patients, in order to increase our knowledge of the molecular changes that occur in schizophrenia.
