Assessment of treatment with psychotropic medications in the rodent brain.
I have systemically treated rats with antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, antidepressants, or vehicle for up to four weeks to examine the effects of psychotropic medications on glutamatergic gene expression. Many of the psychiatrically ill subjects in our human brain tissue cohorts were taking these types of medications at the time of death, and it is often unclear whether or not psychotropic medications contribute to detected changes in gene expression.
