How does Alabama LASER support science education reform?

Alabama LASER adds leadership to the National Science Resource Center's proven five-point model for systemic reform. School systems statewide develop their own strategic plans for introducing inquiry-based science, recognizing that success depends upon:

use of exemplary curricula
professional development for teachers
successful management of the materials demanded by inquiry
appropriate assessment methods
the development of support for science education reform in the community and throughout the school system's administration

Recruitment and Strategic Planning

Alabama LASER brings new school systems on board through informal networking and events to build awareness. Leadership teams from these school systems, many supported by a local or regional business partner, attend a six-day Strategic Planning Institute and produce an informed five-year strategic plan for implementing inquiry science in the elementary and middle schools in their system.

Ongoing Support for Leadership Teams

Alabama LASER supports leadership teams as they take the steps outlined in their strategic plans for science education reform. In addition to following up with leadership teams and providing technical assistance and information referral as needed, Alabama LASER helps teams cultivate community and business support, network with other LASER systems to share successful strategies, and work towards a regional and statewide infrastructure supporting science education reform.
