Lister Hill Library 1997 Renovation Project.

Construction/Renovation Project
The original Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences building was built in 1971. During 1994-1997 it underwent a major expansion and renovation project. This web slide show was produced during the project and was used as a communication tool to keep the library staff and patrons informed about the progress of the project. At the time of its production it was one of the first web slide shows depicting a library construction project. A timeline of the library is available at www.uab.edu/lister/about/timeline.htm

The first phase of this project was construction of an addition, which was built in front of the old structure and now provides an additional 65,000 square feet of space for the library. The groundbreaking ceremony was September 14, 1994. Once the new section was completed, everything was moved into the new space. The move took place over a three-week period in mid to late July into early August 1996. Then, once staff, equipment, books & journals, and, of course, patrons were completely cleared out of the old building, phase two (the renovation of the old section) began. The library accomplished this move while remaining open for business during its usual operating hours.

The renovation was completed in early 1997. The renovated part became accessible to patrons after February 17th, 1997. Dedication ceremonies took place in Friday, May 2, 1997.
