Transition Period (New Half Only)

(Excerpts from the Lister Hill Library Photo Album)

Below are some small (a little larger than thumbnail) photos of some interesting sites during this construction project. Click on the smaller image if you wish to take the time to see a larger, more detailed view.

The new front of Lister Hill Library as viewed from University Blvd.
You can enter the library lobby on either street or plaza level. If you enter on the street level, you will need to go up the stairs or elevator to the plaza level to enter the library.
The Information Desk is just in front of you as you enter the library on the plaza level.
The information area on the first floor is where you would do your computer searching
or ask questions of the reference librarians.
The Circulation Desk is where you can check out books, check out reserve items, pickup media items.
The NLM collection is our main collection of books which can be checked out. These books are on the second floor.
The temporary Microcomputer Lab is also on the second floor. It has IBM-compatible and Macintosh computers available for wordprocessing etc.
Media Services temporary area is on the second floor. You can reserve a video or audio etc. from this unit during the working hours of Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. Materials can be held for you at the Circulation Desk and checked out or viewed on equipment within the library.
The ground floor copyroom contains most of the library's photocopiers.
A cashier's window is available inside the copyroom for purchasing copycards or checking out an auditron. None of the library's copiers take coins or bills. All transactions require either the copycard or auditron.
Ground floor also contains the journals from 1990 to the present. Our journals are arranged alphabetically by title. Library personnel at the ground floor help desk can help you physically locate the journal you are seeking.
The journals (about 2500 titles) from 1990 to the present are located on the ground floor.
The MOST CURRENT volume of approximately 700 of the most popular journals titles are shelved in a browsing area on the ground floor called Current Display.
The journals from 1940 to 1989 are located in the basement on compact shelving. These shelves require that you use a crank to "roll open" the aisle you need. You can then use the green button on the crank to lock the aisle open so you won't get swished. Pre-1940 journals are still located in remote storage (in the Administration building.) UAB patrons can use the library's photocopy/delivery service to order specific articles from the journals in remote storage.
Three copiers are located in the basement for use with the older journals. These copiers all take the LHL copy card.
The Sims window has been installed in a place of honor in the Reynolds Historical Library on the third floor.
The UAB Plane tree that once stood outside Lister Hill Library was removed after it had died in 1994. This tree had a long, honored history at UAB (1968-1994) and had begun life as a root cutting of the Hippocrates Tree from Athens, Greece. This carving of the Staff of Asclepius was made from the trunk of that tree by Dr. John F. Jackson, Professor Emeritus, University of Mississippi School of Medicine through arrangements made by Dr. Wayne Finley, Chairman of the Reynolds Library Associates Steering Committee. The statue was donated to the Reynolds Library by the Caduceus Club, Laboratory of Medical Genetics, and Reynolds Library Associates. It greets visitors by the entrance to the Reynolds Historical Library.
The Reynolds Historical Library and the Alabama Museum of the Health Sciences are in the process of setting back up their displays and returning to business as usual. Here you see a shot of the new facilities with cabinets but not furniture.
