Circulation Desk The Circulation Desk (on the far left as you enter the library on the plaza level) is where books can be checked out and renewed. All printing from the library's computers or photocopying from the library's photocopiers requires use of a copy card. Copy cards can be purchased from the cashier at the Circulation Desk or from the copy card machine on the ground floor.
AskIT Help Desk AskIT Computer Help Desk
The AskIT Computer Help Desk serves as a central PC support call center, providing telephone, email, and walk in support for most common PC problems from supported users, and users experiencing problems accessing Lister Hill Library services. The AskIT Computer Services unit provides server and desktop support, as well as development services, for all supported schools and departments. Although housed within Lister Hill Library, the AskIT unit is under the Vice President for Information Technology.
Print Station With the proliferation of full-text articles and rising paper costs, Lister Hill Library has to charge for printing. This is one of three print servers in the Library. A Lister Hill Library Copy Card is necessary in order to print. Copy cards for other departments on campus do not work in LHL machines. This is the same card that is used for photocopying, although the cost of each varies. All of the computer workstations in the library have short names on their monitors to identify their print jobs for printing. There is also a color printer available near the elevators on first floor.
Group Study Rooms The library has eight group study rooms. The rooms vary in layout but all have a table and chairs that will accommodate about 6-8 people, a marker board, and a computer with both searching and word processing/presentation software. The rooms can be used on a walk-in, first-come basis by UAB groups or individuals, or reserved by UAB groups for up to 3 hours per day. A group study room policy is available.
Study Carrels Study Carrels Study Carrels Study Carrels
The Library has a number of open study carrels on ground, 1st, and 2nd floors. If you need an especially quiet place to study, it is a good idea to get away from the heavy traffic areas; try the 2nd floor carrels, for example.
Catalog Lister Hill Library's catalog uses SirsiDynix's Horizon software. Use the catalog to see if LHL has a particular book, journal, or audiovisual title. You can search by keyword, author, title, subject, and even publisher, ISBN and several other options. In addition to indicating if we have a particular book or journal, the catalog will also indicate if it is checked out or not.
Software Test Pod Software Test Pod
The library has a pod of non-networked stations on the first floor that can be used by UAB faculty, staff, and students to temporarily load their own software, such as test review software. To protect the library's network from possible virus contamination, these stations are not networked and the library makes no guarantee the software loaded in one session will be present at a later time. The software on these stations is regularly stripped off and the stations returned to a "bare bones" condition. In accordance with UAB software policies, loading personal software is not permitted on any other library stations.
