The 8.75-foot-high sculpture entitled Gaia Rises located in the first floor lobby was the gift of Dr. Samuel B. Barker, Graduate Dean Emeritus, UAB. The sculpture weighs about 4000 pounds and was sculpted by the local artist, Leah Webb. It was made from a 5500 pound block of Tennessee Imperial Black Marble (R). Gaia was the classical Greek goddess of the earth. More recently, the Gaia Hypothesis (Lovelock, 1972) has used that name to convey the concept of the Earth as a living being.
The 8.5-foot-high statue of Hippocrates located in the ground floor lobby was the gift of Agatha and Sam Nakos of Birmingham. The statue weighs over five thousand pounds and was sculpted by the noted Greek artist, Kostas Georgakas. It was made from an 8,000 pound block of marble taken from the same quarry as the marble in the Parthenon.
