Room G-40 is a fully equipped electronic classroom, a facility providing the opportunity for hands-on instruction for up to 30 students. Priority in scheduling this room is given to library events, but other UAB faculty can arrange to schedule this room for one-time or short term events by calling 934-2230 or sending an email to Pat Higginbottom, Associate Director for Public Services
.
The ground floor Copy Room contains most of the library's photocopiers, including one coin-operated copier. Copies may be paid for with a copycard, cash/check, credit card (including MasterCard, Visa, Discover, and American Express), or UAB account number; see the current price sheet for details. All cash transactions incur a UAB surcharge and are also subject to sales tax. There is an initial charge of 60¢ for the card itself, and value may be added to the card in 10¢ increments. Treat your card as money; the Library cannot "cancel" a card or give credit for lost or stolen cards.
Copy Card Machine
All printing from the library's computers or photocopying from the library's photocopiers requires use of a copy card. Copy cards can be purchased from the cashier's office at the Circulation Desk or from the copy card machine in the copy room. This machine accepts paper money only and does not give change.
The ground floor also contains journals from 1995 to present in alphabetical order by title. Journal articles may be identified by subject, author, etc., using a number of different online databases, such as OVID or PubMed, or with traditional paper indexes. Journals (bound & unbound) cannot be checked out of the library.
We are currently moving journals dated 1980-1995 from ground floor to the basement. Ultimately the ground floor will have journals from 1995 to present. More information on this shifting project.
The issues of the most current volume of the library's journals are shelved in a browsing area on the ground floor called Current Display. "Most current" issues can vary between the last two months to the last year, depending on how fast the journal grows and how frequently it is published.
Library personnel at the ground floor Help Desk can assist you physically locate the journal you are seeking. Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery also have their offices on this floor. This unit orders books or articles from other libraries if LHL doesn't have what our users need. More information about Document Delivery.
Instructional Technologies The AskIT Instructional Technologies Center is an educational software evaluation and distance learning consultation facility for use by UAB faculty, staff and students. This facility will investigate and evaluate new technologies as they emerge and will assist the faculty in applying these new hardware and software systems to distributed learning applications. The role of the Center is to provide a technical support foundation that the faculty can use to launch an on-line course or to augment an existing course with on-line course material. For further information, call 934-0410 or 934-0452.
This is a general map of the basement floor.
The pre-1995 journals are located in the basement on compact shelving. These shelves require that you use a crank to "roll open" the aisle you need. Don't worry about getting squashed; the aisles have a light beam at floor level that senses whether someone is in the aisle.
A copier that uses the LHL copy card is located in the basement for use with the older journals.
