MLA/CHLA 2000: VANCOUVER

   The first ever joint meeting of the Medical Library Association (MLA) and the Canadian Health Libraries Association (CHLA) was held May 5 - 11, 2000 in Vancouver, BC.  Lister Hill Library was well represented at the meeting by five faculty members.  Library Director T. Scott Plutchak was active in many areas including chairing the Leadership and Management Section and moderating their invited speakers session II, "You Never Stop Learning: Developing Leadership Skills Throughout Your Career."  He also chaired the Editorial Board meeting as BMLA editor and convened the first  Editors' Guild meeting.  Deputy Director Nancy Clemmons was busy performing duties associated with the MLA Nominating Committee, Southern Chapter Executive Board, BMLA Editorial Board (as Senior Associate Editor), Editors' Guild Meeting, Chapter Sharing Roundtable (as facilitator), Awards Committee meeting (incoming chair of the Lucretia W. McClure Excellence in Education Award Jury), and the Vision Science Librarians Special Interest Group meeting.
     Also representing LHL was Associate Director for Planning and Assessment B.J. Schorre.  Her meeting involvement included participation in the Collection Development Section where she serves on the Membership Committee, was elected as Chair-elect for 2000/01 and attended two meetings of the MLA 2001 National Program Committee for Section Planners.  She also serves in the Technical Services Section as co-editor of the Section's newsletter, co-webmaster of the Section's web page and a member of the Nominating Committee.
    Assistant Director for Information and Instructional Services Patricia Higginbottom also attended the meeting and chaired MLA's Membership Committee and hosted the New Members/First Time Attendee breakfast.  She was also a panelist on the program entitled, "You Never Stop Learning: Developing Leadership Skills Throughout Your Career."  Martha Verchot, LHL Education and Website Coordinator, also attended the Vancouver meeting and was busy as a facilitator for a post-conference symposium on electronic journals, attending a CE workshop on teaching advanced information seeking techniques in evidence-based medicine, serving on a MLA Research Grant Jury and organizing an Internet Special Interest Group. Tracy Powell, LHL Hospital Branch Librarian, was also present and represented the library at the Hospital Librarian's business meeting and luncheon, served as a member of the Awards Committee and participated in a roundtable discussion on Intranets.
