November/December 2000LHL PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIESLister Hill Library has been well represented at professional meetings held over the last few months. Wilhelmina Myles, Tracy Powell, Sylvia McAphee and Ed Harris attended the Horizon Users Group 2000 annual Meeting held in Salt Lake City on November 5-8. At the meeting, Ed Harris (Computer Services) and Sylvia McAphee (Collection Management), along with Christie Resha (EBSCO), co-presented a PowerPoint presentation on EDI Serials Claiming. Donnelly Lancaster and Tim Pennycuff attended the society of American Archivists annual meeting in Denver the last week of August. They also attended the Society of Alabama Archivists' fall meeting held in Birmingham where Tim Pennycuff was one of the discussants in a roundtable session titled "Cooperative Agreements Between Archival Repositories and Non-Archival Organizations." Ellen Griffin presented a paper at the 2000 Georgia Council of Media organizations/Southeastern Library Association Joint Conference held at Jekyll Island, Georgia, October 11-13. The paper, "Approaching Chaos and Connectivity: A Look at the Effects of Ongoing Technological Innovation on the Library Profession," was one of two papers selected for presentation at the SELA University and College Libraries Section's "New Voices" program, open to new librarians from the twelve SELA states. She also received a monetary prize - a $50 check from EBSCO, the program's sponsor. B.J. Schorre attended the "Create Change in Your Institution: Response to a Crisis in Scholarly Communication" workshop sponsored by the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries on October 28; and the American Association of Medical Colleges annual meeting, October 29-31, in Chicago IL. The Alabama Health Libraries Association (ALHeLA) and the Southern Chapter of the Medical Library Association (SC/MLA) held a joint annual meeting October 20-24 in Mobile, Alabama. LHL staff participating in the event were Tracy Powell who presented a paper on marketing information management skills and coordinated the ALHeLA booth in the exhibit area, Patricia Higginbottom and Ed Harris who presented a paper entitled, "The Virtual Desktop: Remote Patron Authentication and Application Management." Pat is also the Web site coordinator for SC/MLA. Kay Hogan presented a paper titled, "Jubilee, We Did It! Setting Up a Cooperative, Multi-type Library Consumer Health Information Network." Nancy Clemmons was a member on a panel discussing, "What is Leadership?" She was also chair of the Strategic Planning Committee. Scott Plutchak moderated a panel on Electronic Information and introduced C.G. Goldsmith who was one of the key speakers of the meeting. Other meeting attendees from LHL were Jack Smith, Martha Verchot, Jay Harris and Sondra Pfeiffer. Scott Plutchak also attended the Annual Meeting of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), which includes the annual meeting of the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries. He is also a member of the Steering Committee of the AAMC's Group on Information Resources. |
