Journal Cancellations for 2001
While canceling journals is never easy for librarians, prudent fiscal
management requires that we pay very careful attention to how we spend
UAB resources. For over a decade the cost of print materials for
a library like ours has been increasing an annual rate of 10% to 15%.
Adding to the pressure in recent years is the increasing number of electronic
resources available, many of which still require an accompanying print
subscription. LHL is currently spending roughly $1,000,000 per year
on print serials, and, with the current budget situation, the library's
base budget has not seen any increases in several years.
The attached list was developed using a several stage process.
We maintain re-shelving statistics for all journals. Using those
statistics, we identified several hundred titles that had received relatively
little use during the past two years. A team of library staff, representing
all areas of the library, then examined those titles individually and voted
on whether or not the title should be cancelled or kept. Among the
factors influencing the decision were such things as cost, ISI impact factor,
indexing, availability of the journal elsewhere in the state, etc.
Input from UAB faculty resulted in 12 titles being "reprieved from cancellation"
for 2001.
