Changes in Full-Text Collections Through OVID

As of 2001, Lister Hill Library is discontinuing 2 of the 3 full text collections available through OVID.  The remaining collection will be discontinued when it is time to renew the license in the fall of 2001.  Since the back files of the full text collection have been paid for, we will continue to provide access to them through links within OVID.  The listings for the full text collections will be removed from the OVID system, however, since they will no longer be current.

There are several reasons we are discontinuing the full text collections through OVID.  First, we have access to a majority of the journals through other means, most often direct from the publisher's web site.  This access provides the full text much more quickly than through OVID, which sometimes took several months to make the articles available.  Also, duplication of resources is not a good use of library funds.  Format has also been an issue.  We have heard from our users that articles in PDF format are much preferred over the html format used by OVID.  Most publishers provide access in PDF format.

Journals that will no longer be available electronically include:

¨      Mayo Clinic Proceedings
¨      American Journal of Public Health
¨      British Journal of Haematology
¨      Journal of Urology
¨      Nature (after 3-1-01)
¨      Obstetrical and Gynecological Survey

When-and if-those titles are made available electronically, with acceptable licensing conditions, we will restore access.

Other methods of electronic access to articles in OVID can be found through the Online Holdings links displayed with the complete record in OVID.
