Library School Association Presents 2001 Distinguished Alumni Award
Lisa Rains Russell, Library School Association President, announced
the LSA 2001 Distinguished Alumni Award winner, Nancy Washington Clemmons,
during the luncheon program on Alumni Day, September 28, 2001, at the University
of Alabama. Ms. Clemmons is currently the Deputy Director of Lister Hill
Library of the Health Sciences at UAB, where she has worked since June
of 1977. Russell shared comments from the letters of support
for Clemmons' nomination: "Since the early 1970's Nancy has been a mainstay
in the world of Alabama libraries and librarians. Her primary impact
has been in health science libraries but her impact is far wider when one
considers her support of librarians and her involvement in professional
activities, which include a variety of libraries and reach well beyond
the geographical region." Another person wrote, "On the national
level, Nancy Clemmons represents Alabama and SLIS exceedingly well through
her service to the Medical Library Association. . she has served or chaired
more national committees than most people could name. More importantly,
she is a Distinguished member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals,
a separate body affiliated with MLA which recognizes those professionals
who meet very specific and demanding criteria for continuing professional
excellence. And a third person wrote, "Nancy is a perfect choice
for the Distinguished Alumni Award because she is a complete librarian.
She believes in what she does --believes that library work is important.
She has an unerring passion for doing the right thing. She is patient
with the things and people that sometimes make it hard to do the right
thing. She is generous with everyone. She is smart and practical.
She is always learning. Her keen sense of humor and her utter integrity
make her a joy to work with. You could not find a better role model
as a person or as a professional than Nancy Clemmons." Russell
added that Clemmons' professional association work includes serving as
vice-president of LSA in 1985-86 and as an LSA Board Member from 1993-2000.
Russell presented Clemmons with a plaque recognizing her as LSA's 2001
Distinguished Alumni Award winner. Clemmons expressed her gratitude
and pride to LSA for the honor.
