November/December 2001National Medical Librarians MonthOctober 2001 Since 1997, the Medical Library Association has celebrated October as Medical Librarians Month. Medical Librarians around the country acknowledge their proficiency in attaining quality health information. This time also provides the opportunity for medical librarians to inform their colleagues, students, and community members about heath information sources. Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences at UAB is no exception. Lister Hill had a month filled with fun and
educational activities. During the first week of October information tables
were set up in the entrance lobby of LHL and in the cafeteria of University
Hospital during high traffic periods so that people could stop and ask
questions and gather information about the Library and services. The second
week of October began with electronic-based information sessions. Pat Higginbottom,
Tracy Powell, Martha Verchot, and Jack Smith conducted electronic journal
demonstrations and trouble shooting sessions. Classes were taught at the
West Pavilion and LHL on how to access electronic journals.
In addition to National Medical Librarians month, Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences was also celebrating the 30th anniversary of the library building. On Monday November 22, President Ann Reynolds and Provost Arol Augsburger spoke on the contributions of the library. Henrietta Hill Hubbard, Senator Lister Hill's daughter, and her husband, Charles Hubbard attended the event. Afterwards, the library hosted an open house. Staff members gave tours. Lister Hill Library at University Hospital also held an open house on Wednesday November 24th. The Library topped off the month with a lecture on October 31st. Friends of Lister Hill Library sponsored By Design: Building Web Pages, a panel presentation by Dr. Charles McLafferty (Education), Gary Chapman (Art), Craig Beard (Sterne Library), and Patricia Higginbottom (Lister Hill Library). These professors made presentations on their web pages and the design software that they use to build them. National Medical Librarians Month was an educational, informative, and fun time for everyone involved. |
