Database Spotlight--BIOSIS Previews

While MEDLINE is a very important and beneficial database, it does not cover all of the literature published in the field of medicine. Another significant database is BIOSIS Previews.

BIOSIS Previews is the online equivalent of Biological Abstracts and Biological Abstracts/RRM (Reports,Reviews, Metings). According to the Gale Directory of Databases, "[This database] contains more than 10.5 million citations, with abstracts (for approximately 50% of the records), to worldwide literature on research in the life sciences: microbiology; plant and animal science; experimental med icine; agriculture; pharmacology; ecology; biochemistry; biotechnology; and neurology. Covers original research reports, reviews of original research, history and philosophy of biology and biomedicine, and documentation and retrieval of biological information. Sources include approximately 6000 periodicals, as well as books, monographs, conference proceedings, research communications, software reviews, symposia, reviews, notes and letters." Years of coverage are 1969 to the present.

To search this database, we must go through an online vendor. Because of this, the price for a search is more expensive than a search from a locally held database. However, if you have already researched your topic on MEDLINE and need more information, or if you want to ensure you have researched a topic comprehensively, this is a good database to search. For more information about BIOSIS Previews, contact the Information Desk or look at the BIOSIS home page on the World Wide Web at http://www.biosis.org.
