Journal Review Process

Faculty Input Needed

Lister Hill Library wants to provide users with the most useful journals.  Each year the staff evaluates the journal collection by considering the following criteria:
  • Usage statistics
  • Indexing in a major index, abstract, or database
  • Availability at other local libraries
  • Availability in electronic format
  • Subscription Price
  • Cost per Use
  • Research, Clinical, Educational Programs at UAB
  • Other journals in the discipline
  • Number of interlibrary loan requests
  • Faculty and user recommendations
In early August the staff will compile a list of potential candidates for cancellation.  In mid-August the list will be distributed to the Deans and the Library Advisory Committee.  If you are interested in seeing a copy of the potential cuts, check on the Library's web site http://medicus.lhl.uab.edu/journal/, or call the Director's Office (934-5460) for a hard copy.

If faculty wish to keep titles, they should submit reasons why the library should keep particular titles even though they show low usage.  Based on campus feedback, we will make our final cancellation decisions in early September.
