This month we celebrate the anniversary of a VERY important event for the Medical Center. The event we have chosen to celebrate happened 40 years ago. Care to guess what might have been so important in May of 1968?

Community of Science unavailable after October 31

Dear UAB COS users,

Community of Science will no longer be available at UAB after October 31, 2007. Based on the limited usage that COS has received, the office of the VP for Research will no longer be providing the funding which has made COS available at UAB.

If you have questions about your profile, search alerts, or any other needs related to getting the most out of COS before it is gone, please review the material below and then contact the Lister Hill Library if you still have questions.

What does this mean if I have a profile in the COS Expertise database ?
If you set up a COS profile you will no longer have access to this profile but you can export a copy by selecting the Produce a CV link in your workbench. Also, the profile database will no longer be available for searching.

What does this mean if I use COS to keep up with my publications, etc. and to export my CV?

You will need to export your CV prior to November 1, 2007 using the method outlined above.

Will I be able to continue searching the Funding Opps database?

No, but below there are several sources listed that allow you to search for funding and to set up search alerts.

What if I have saved search alerts?

They will not be updated. Grants Net and Grants.gov both provide for saved searches and/or search alerts.

Are there other places to search for funding?

Yes, try the links below or contact the library for help.

New Resource: Drug Facts & Comparisons

Lister Hill Library is happy to announce the purchase of a new online drug resource: Drug Facts & Comparisons as of September 1, 2007.

Check it out!.

A quick visual outline of the resources is available in the first 8 sections of this product tutorial: http://www.factsandcomparisons.com/flashtutorial/.

The following information is from the F&C promotional literature.

Facts & Comparisons, the primary source for drug information for pharmacists, physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals, provides drug information, interactions, herbal information, and patient medication handouts in Facts & Comparisons 4.0, seamlessly updated and customized to suit your needs.

A To Z Drug Facts
is an easy-to-use drug reference that integrates abridged drug information with patient care guidelines. Monographs include pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, indications, administration and dosage, drug interactions, adverse reactions, and warnings/precautions. Includes more than 1500 up-to-date monographs. Appendix material includes tables and charts on drug names that look and sound alike, oral dosage forms not to be crushed or chewed, and the latest childhood immunization schedule.

Drug Facts and Comparisons is a comprehensive drug information compendium. Organized by therapeutic drug classes, the format is designed to provide a wide scope of drug information in a manner that facilitates evaluations and comparisons. A comprehensive index of generic and trade name drugs, a detailed table of contents for each therapeutic section, and numerous cross references enable the user to quickly locate critical information. Route-specific monographs are also available when a drug can be administered by more than one route.

Drug Interaction Facts includes more than 1,700 concise interaction monographs. Each monograph includes the interacting drugs, a significance rating of 1 to 5, and details about the onset, severity, and documentation of each interaction. Also included are descriptions of the effects, mechanism, and management, as well as a brief review and assessment of the studies used to document the interaction. Primary references for the monograph are cited and linked to PubMed. Quick search by trade or generic drug names or the by drug class, and hyperlinks that reference both internal and external resources.

Herbal Interaction Facts allows the health professional to answer consumer questions regarding safety issues about possible drug-herb and drug-food interactions. Includes more than 100 monographs and discusses the interaction’s significance, onset, severity, documentation, mechanism, and more.

MedFacts Patient Information provides patient information to supplement verbal patient counseling. MedFacts was developed to meet federal recommendations (ie, the Action Plan for the Provision of Useful Prescription Medicine Information (ie, the Keystone guidelines)). MedFacts is an important tool to help pharmacists meet OBRA requirements. MedFacts monographs are available in English and Spanish.

Nonprescription Drug Therapy provides information on commonly occurring conditions and their nonprescription pharmacotherapy options. Each monograph contains information on etiology, symptoms, treatment, and patient assessment and counseling. OTC drug monographs include actions, indications, contraindications, adverse reactions, product listings, and patient information

The Review of Natural Products is the foremost source of current natural product information for health care professionals. It includes in-depth monographs about natural products based on scientific research, not just anecdotal information. The Review of Natural Products provides detailed information about natural products; including their botany, history, chemistry, pharmacology, medicinal uses, toxicology, and patient information. Also included is a Clinical Overview section for quick reference.
