How to Become a Member

In order to become a member of LSC, one must go through the application process. Applications will be available in HUC 440 at the beginning of spring semester. Once an application is turned in, the candidate must complete an interview. Around 18 members will be selected.

Committees of LSC

Members of Leadership and Service Council are responsible for coordinating various programs for the UAB student body. They create these programs and events within their committees. There are five committees in LSC. They are:

Into the Streets

This committee is in charge of Into the Streets, our biannual community outreach day that allows from 500-1000 students to do community service for a day. Each outreach day, students and staff from all over campus meet and go out to work with various projects in the Birmingham metro area. Projects can range from painting a house to working with Humane Society. Into the Streets has become a signature event bringing together a diverse group of people and allowing them to work together to make Birmingham a better place.

Monthly Volunteer Service

The Monthly Service Committee is responsible for coordinating monthly service projects for UAB students to attend. The projects vary from month to month and are usually in conjunction with various events coordinated by Birmingham organizations.

On-going Volunteer Service

This committee is responsible for coordinating all the continuous volunteer activities held throughout the year for UAB students. Each year the chairpersons of this committee will select several organizations or groups in the community to work with and recruit students to work with those organizations. Organizations that we have worked with in the past have been Habitat for Humanity, Glen Iris School, Salvation Army, and Ronald Mcdonald House.

Retreats

This committee is responsible for coordinating our annual Fall Leadership Conference and our Winter Leadership Retreat. These two programs provide leadership training for 120 students annually by bringing knowledgeable professionals to facilitate workshops on leadership. The Fall Leadership Conference is held annually in September and is held on a Saturday during the day. The Winter Leadership Retreat is held annually in January at an off-campus location during the entire weekend. This committee allows students opportunities to meet other students and become more educated in the area of leadership.

Social Change

The Social Change Committee is responsible for providing opportunities for awareness and action for the UAB campus to learn more about current issues and to act on creating change in the community. Projects with the Social Change Committee include the Canned Food Drive and the UAB Hunger Banquet.
