Steven M. Pogwizd was born in Chicago, Illinois in October 1955. He received a BA degree in Chemistry (Magna cum laude) from the University of Chicago in 1977 and a MD from Washington University 1981. He completed his residency at Michael Reese Hospital, Chicago, in 1984, and then returned to Washington University where he was a research fellow, clinical fellow, and attending physician at Barnes Hospital. He served as Assistant Professor of Medicine at Washington University from 1989-1998 and then returned to Chicago in 1998 where he served as Professor of Medicine and Interim Co-Director of Cardiology at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He joined the faculty of UAB in January 2008 as Professor of Medicine, Biomedical Engineering and Physiology & Biophysics. He was named the Featheringill Endowed Professor in Cardiac Arrhythmia Research, and Director of the Center for Cardiovascular Research.
