The Civitan International Research Center (CIRC) is an interdisciplinary center dedicated to improving lives through neurodevelopmental research and the prevention and treatment of developmental disabilities. Established in 1989, the CIRC now includes over 100 scientists, clinicians and research staff from around the globe.

On September 1, 2018, Craig Powell, M.D., Ph.D., became director of the CIRC and chair of the Department of Neurobiology at the UAB School of Medicine.  Dr. Powell is a national leader in research pertaining to molecular mechanisms of learning and memory, synaptic plasticity, and neuropsychiatric disorders such as autism, intellectual disability, and Alzheimer's.
