The Quick Guide Laboratory Series

The Quick Guide series, authored by leading laboratory medicine practitioners from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, provides instant 4" X 6" pocket references for house staff of all specialties, nurses, pharmacists, and medical technologists. The Guides are useful adjunct texts for medical, nursing, pharmacy, and medical technology students.

The "Quick Guide to Coagulation Testing", Second Edition, has been released!  Order from the AACC online or using the AACC Publications Form.

The "Quick Guide to Coagulation Testing", Second Edition, is a quick-access, readily available pocket reference for health practitioners who order, collect, perform, or interpret hemostasis laboratory test results or administer hemostasis-related therapy.

The Guide outlines the most common hemorrhagic and thrombotic conditions together with their respective assays to emphasize correct laboratory evaluation.  Treatment discussions include the prophyslactic and therapeutic application of non-biological, synthetic, and human blood-derived components to control bleeding, and the use of antithrombotics designed to prevent or resolve arterial and venous occlusions.  The emphasis is on proprer dosing and valid laboratory monitoring of hemostatic therapy.

New to the second edition is a series of introductory-reference tables summarizing hemostasis assays for various conditions with their reference intervals, and when applicable, therapeutic ranges.  The discussion of platelet and coagulation physiology is expanded, platelet function testing is detailed, and new antithrombotic therapies are described with therapeutic monitoring recommendations.  All portions of the second edition have been enhanced to reflect current international practice standards.

In the meantime, the 1st edition "Quick Guide to Coagulation Testing" is still available and covers the following information:

  • Hemostasis Blood Specimen Management
  • Therapeutic Ranges and Reference Intervals
  • Suggested Hemostasis and Coagulation Test Menu
  • Thrombophilia Guidelines
  • Anticoagulant Monitoring Guidelines
  • Guidelines for the Management of Bleeding
  • Guidelines for the Management of Platelet Disorders
Coagulation Testing     Coagulation Testing 1     Hematology Testing    Transfusion Medicine

The "Quick Guide to Hematology Testing" and "Quick Guide to Transfusion Medicine" are the companion guides to our current best-selling handbook, "Quick Guide to Coagulation Testing".  All three Guides demonstrate how to order and interpret diagnostic laboratory tests and how to monitor therapy. The "Quick Guide to Transfusion Medicine" also explains donor and transfusion management, aphe-resis, and the use of red blood cells, plasma, cryoprecipitate and platelet concentrate.
