In an effort to support the holistic wellness of students, the UABSOM Student Senate created a Prayer and Meditation Room. It provides an important space for quiet prayer, reflection, and meditation. Scientific evidence indicates that there are significant physiological, mental, and cognitive benefits to meditation. It is our hope that the prayer and Religious Symbolsmeditation room will allow students of all faiths to experience a place of peace and sanctuary while learning and working.

Located inside Medical Alumni Association Volker Hall Room 210B, this quiet space is designed for reflection, meditation, and silent prayer and is open 24 hours a day. OneCard access is forthcoming for entrance; currently, the room is unlocked.

Students who wish to use the space are asked to follow a few simple guidelines:

  • Prayer or meditation does not necessarily need to be silent, but it should be quiet enough not to disturb anyone studying in adjacent areas or rooms
  • The Prayer and Meditation Room can be reserved; a sign-out binder is posted on the door to Room 201B.
  • The Prayer and Meditation Room is not to be used for studying or for meetings
  • Please keep the Prayer and Meditation Room clean. All personal materials are to be removed from the space after use. Mats need be returned to the allotted location
  • The use of fire, including lit candles or incense, is not permitted in the Prayer and Meditation Room
  • Symbols of faith must be removed after each individual usage and the overall tone of the room shall be religiously neutral
  • No items are to be removed from the room
  • Food and beverages are not permitted in the space
