The core mission of the division is to provide exceptional educational opportunities for medical students and internal medicine residents. The Primary Care residency track, one of the oldest in the country and the Women’s Health track continue to attract highly devoted individuals.

Among the ranks, eight have served as Chief Medical Resident and six have advanced fellowship training in medical education, outcomes research, ethics, or academic general internal medicine.
 
 
 


Scholarship

Faculty conduct innovative research aimed at expanding the frontiers of medical education research. Presentations at the Society of General Internal Medicine and at the American College of Physicians national meetings is a highlight for all.

Medical Education

Division members have received multiple honors for excellence in teaching each year since 1998 – locally and nationally. Medical education leadership positions are held by division members – Dr. Lisa Willett, Tinsley Harrison Internal Medicine residency program director, Dr. Jason Morris, Associate residency program director, Dr. Gustavo Heudebert, Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education, Dr. Robert Centor, Dean Huntsville Campus, Dr. William Curry, Associate Dean for Primary Care, and others.

Post-graduate training in quality and safety is offered through the VA Chief Medical Resident in Quality and Safety (CMRQS) and the VA Quality Scholars Fellowship (VAQS).

 

Clinical Care & Service

The faculty practice is located at the Kirklin Clinic. We are committed to provide outstanding clinical service. Division members also care for hospitalized patients at University Hospital and at the Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

In collaboration with a growing hospitalist service at the Birmingham VAMC (led by Dr. Andrew Sellers), faculty provide direct patient care for some of the most complex patients in Alabama.

Division members are actively involved in professional organizations including the American College of Physicians, Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine (APDIM), Association of Clerkship Directors in Internal Medicine (ACDIM), National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM), and the Association of Chiefs and Leaders in GIM (ACLGIM) among others.
