Bio

Dr. Phabinly James Gabriel received his M.D. from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (NJMS). Prior to medical training, Dr. Gabriel worked in health care consulting and health policy, which today inspires his research and advocacy in health equity in global neurosurgery. Before beginning his neurosurgical residency at The University of Alabama at Birmingham, he completed PGY-1 and PGY-2 years in General Surgery at Rutgers NJMS. He holds a B.A. in Neuroscience & Psychology from Wesleyan University. From Newark, NJ, he is a proud son of Haitian immigrants.

Dr. Gabriel is a founding member of the Society of Haitian Neuroscientists which brings together over 100 members in six countries working together to advance neurological care and mental health in Haitian communities. He is a member of the Global Neurosurgery Junior Committee at the World Federation of Neurological Societies, which aims to address the unmet need for neurosurgical care worldwide. Dr. Gabriel’s research focuses on skull base neurosurgical techniques, clinical outcomes, addressing neurosurgical access issues in low-to-middle-income countries (LMICs), and epidemiological research on neurosurgical disease burden in LMICs. In his free time, Dr. Gabriel is an avid athlete and traveler, a life-long fan of Japanese anime, and a Latin dance enthusiast.
